In 1975, David Bowie played the part of an alien in the cult movie The Man Who Fell to Earth and was widely acclaimed for his acting ability. Nick Roeg directed the film, set in New Mexico, using an all-British crew. The Sunday Times commissioned Duffy to take photos on the set. Duffy persuaded Bowie to drive out to White Sands, where he shot two rolls of film just as the sun set using a long exposure.
